“I Told You So That You’re Gonna Laugh!”

January 17, 2008

I’ve watched one episode of Snips before.
I watched it alone and stared at it in embarrassment.

I looked bad. Real bad.

Jay (Snip’s make up artist) applied too much make up on me.

When filming, I was aware that the make up was too thick, and my hair was done in such a way that I look hilariously bad.
The grown ups all said that I looked okay (probably not to make me flip out)
and that it’s the usual basis of ’screen’ make up.

So I went on with it and just cooperate anyway.
Hoping that maybe those thick cosmetics on my face would look better on camera.

To my disappointment, I still look awkward with those make up.

If you’ve met me, then you’ll know that I can look about 4 years younger.
When I was filming this, I was 16.
Minus it by 4: 12 years old.

Imagine that!

A primary kid, wearing heavy make up!
Those obvious red-pinkish blusher made me look even more ridiculous.

The Kementerian watched it and they praised me,

“Wah, very good ah. Primary school kid also can already act!”

Aoskdpkdfeijgfep?!?!
The fact that they thought I was 12, I don’t mind.
But I’m just grossed out by the equation of THICK make up and a PRIMARY KID!

After the end of JAG’s fourth rehearsals,
it just left me, Gus, and Gerard.

Then Gerard invited us to watch 2 episodes of Snips.
I dreaded for that since someone else (Gus) is going to watch me on tv.

While the credits were rolling, I turned to Gerard,

JAEZ: Gerard, don’t you think I look bad in this episode?
GERARD: Huh? No! You look okay. You’re just insecure.
JAEZ: No, Gerard. I look bad. Admit it.
GERARD: No, you look okay.

Then BAM!

The first thing that came on screen was my face.

Then throw in together the thick make ups
and a headband that pulled my hair all the way through the front of my roots,
Revealing my gigantic wide forehead!

LAUGHTERS ROARED IN THE ROOM!!!

Of course I was expecting Gus to laugh,
but man, even Gerard exploded at that point!

So much for, “No, Jazreen. You look OKAY!”

Then 20 minutes after that, I nudged Gus,
“Are YOU laughing…”

Gus, covering up his mouth, muffling and CHOKING BACK his laughter,
“NO! I’M NOT LAUGHING! Kekekekeke!”

And Gerard laughed. Again.
Gus, on the other hand, NEVER stopped laughing as we watched through the 2 episodes.

This just encourage me not to tell my friends and families when the show is scheduled to air on tv.

Hah, Gerard! I told you that you’re going to laugh at me!

Back at CCD.

December 19, 2007

Last year, I’ve acted in an educational English series for TV Pendidikan (TVP), under Code Computer Designs (CCD) -

Snips & Snaps.

‘Snips & Snaps’ is a show to educate form 1-3 students on English according to the syllabus.

During the whole period, my parents were my only means of transport.
They were usually late due to their jobs and the traffic jams.
So I’ve spent a lot of time in the office while waiting for them.

Our 2 weeks rehearsals were in the office.
‘Before and after’ the shootings were spent there.
During breaks and lunches, we hung around the office.

From that said, it’s obvious that during the 3-4 weeks together,
the office is like a house to the casts and crews.

Initially, we were supposed to film 6 episodes.
3 in 2006, and another 3 in 2007.
We only made it through the first 3.
TVP cancelled the show after that.

The last time we (the actors) were at CCD’s office, it was after finishing the 3 episodes.
we left the office with thoughts that we’ll meet again next month.
It didn’t occur to us that it will be our last goodbye.

Gerard, Harjit, Samantha, Amie, Firas, Hong (can’t remember the name), Chong (can’t remember the name well either), Camy, Jay, Choo, and Hafi.

It has been about a year since then.

When I came back to the office yesterday, it still looks the same.

Funny, there are still a strong sense of familiarity there.

WHAT HAVE CHANGED:

  • I don’t see Firas lying around on the sofa singing Firaslicious Fergalicious.
  • Sam is not there to snap at Firas “You are SO annoying!”
  • Camera crews aren’t there.

WHAT’ STILL THE SAME:

  • The office’s arrangements are still the same.
  • The familiar outdated posters.
  • Harjit with a black t-shirt and three-quarter khakis.
  • Gerard’s shiny bald head.
  • Quiet Choo smiling, working herself off using the computer.
  • Hafi smoking outside the office, creeping out anybody who walks past him.

And I still see the same words on their whiteboard:

It says “hen -> ayam”

A year have passed, and they STILL haven’t clean their whiteboard?!
